Theo Thông tấn xã Việt Nam, trong khuôn khổ Hội nghị Bộ trưởng Ngoại giao ASEAN lần thứ 59 (AMM-59) và các hội nghị liên quan, ngày 22/7, Lê Hoài Trung, Ủy viên Bộ Chính trị Trung ương Đảng Cộng sản Việt Nam, Bộ trưởng Bộ Ngoại giao và Winston Peters, Bộ trưởng Bộ Ngoại giao New Zealand, đồng chủ trì Hội nghị Bộ trưởng Ngoại giao ASEAN-New Zealand tại Manila, Philippines. Các ngoại trưởng và quan chức cấp cao của hai bên đều tham dự.

Bộ trưởng Lai Huaizhong có bài phát biểu khai mạc với tư cách là Điều phối viên quan hệ ASEAN-New Zealand, hoan nghênh những tiến triển tích cực gần đây trong quan hệ song phương. Đồng thời, nhấn mạnh cần biến nền tảng chính trị tốt đẹp thành kết quả hợp tác cụ thể, thực chất, thúc đẩy hợp tác trên cơ sở phát huy lợi thế của nhau và tháo gỡ những trở ngại hiện có. Bộ trưởng Lai Huaizhong đề nghị ASEAN và New Zealand ưu tiên tăng cường hợp tác để đảm bảo nhu cầu cơ bản của người dân và xây dựng chuỗi cung ứng năng lượng, thực phẩm an toàn và có khả năng phục hồi cao. Ngoài ra, hai bên cần tiếp tục tăng cường phối hợp duy trì hòa bình, an ninh và kết nối hàng hải, thúc đẩy phát triển nền kinh tế đại dương xanh, phù hợp luật pháp quốc tế, đặc biệt là Công ước Liên hợp quốc về Luật Biển 1982 (UNCLOS 1982).
